Waipio Valley 4/28/11

These flows just north of Kona offered us a real treat...
Xenoliths! The funky crystals were once part of the mantle that was then ripped-off by passing magma and brought to the surface in a lava flow. Pretty…
The A'a can be pretty sharp here, making all of the broken bottles tossed off the highway seem mundane.
The last full day on the island was spent visiting Waipio Valley. It's a steep 900' below us.
Mrs H makes any photo look better.
What a cliff! We really wanted down, so we took our Jeep down one of the steepest paved roads I have ever had the pleasure of driving.
That's a big leaf!
The river at the bottom of the valley.
Downstream shot of river.
This shot gives a sense of just how high the surrounding cliffs are.
The doggone falls just weren't flowing very strongly.
I asked "Why the long face?"
Finally down on the beach.
Normally there should be huge waterfalls streaming off the cliffs behind Mrs. H.
Another gratuitous beach shot.
Where are the WATERFALLS!!??
