6/24/11

June 24 - Mammoth Hot Springs, Wolf sighting!

1 The morning started-out great... big elk relatively close to the road.
2 He was a majestic boy.
3 Um, don't get too close folks.
4 The Firehole River, like every other river we saw on the trip, was near capacity too. I love the gentle meanders.
5 First official stop of the day was Lower Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
6 All of the yellow rock (hence Yellowstone) is just a massive amount of oxidized rhyolite ash that is the remnant of the last major eruption of Yellowstone Caldera. The volume of erupted material from Yellowstone's largest eruption was over 2500 times larger than Mt St Helens' 1980 eruption!
7 Oxidized rhyolite is pretty.
8 Steve..
9 Dammit Steve, just wait until we're ready!
10 That's better.
11 Look closely for people standing on the brink of the falls. That was our next stop. But this view gives a nice perspective of what a 308' fall looks like.
12 There was a slight rainbow at the base of the falls, and I decided to have a little fun and make the rainbow more visible.
13 This was the best view of Upper Yellowstone Falls.
14 The trail down to the Lower Falls overlook. Horace, Steve and David seem oblivious to the demon child vexing them in the background.
15 Geoffrey and Vera contemplate the volume os water plummeting over the esge of Lower Yellowstone Falls.
16 The view downstream... looking towards our viewpoint from earlier in the day.
17 I thought thissnow patch had an interesting pattern to it.
18 Indian tourist, Horace, Vera, Cecilia, Steve, David, Geoffrey.
19 A sneak-shot of Laura.
20 The precispice.
