  20090811_high_emigrant_lake_0146.JPG - The black minerals are hornblende crystals (about 1" long) in the pinkish volcanic rock called andesite.  When large crystals are surrounded by a matrix of really small crystals (such as in this photo... the pink stuff really is made up of microcrytals, I swear!) we say the rock has a porphyritic texture.
