Educational Philosophy

The Earth Sciences are a subject that we live with every day and as such I strive to let my students experience & explore their world through my passion for the subject.  Personal, positive experiences are key to developing a vested interest in any subject and nowhere are those interests more valuable than in my classes which strive to develop a sense of civic and natural responsibility for my students’ planet. How do I go about accomplishing the feat? As a visual and hands-on learner myself, my lectures are animated and littered with tons of photos from my vast field-study and hiking experiences. Demonstrations and activities are frequent, as are relevant real-world examples of how to be geo-smart. More importantly, fun, excitement and intriguing discussions are the order of the day! My class tends to infiltrate the brains of every student, whether they like it or not.  How do I know? Countless comments along the lines of “I was driving/biking/hiking the other day and couldn’t help but thinking about the rocks/weather/water we passed along the way.  Curse you, Hollister!” (Active fist pumping ensues).  Life is too short not to have fun on this planet, and I endeavor to make this planet fun for my students.

Photography

When I am not actively teaching in a classroom or tinkering with projects I can usually be found out on the trail with my wife digitally capturing the many scenic areas that are in close proximity to our house.  What originally started as a hobby and resource for better classroom lectures has been steadily morphing into a full-fledged passion, replete with gallery shows. I hope to steadily increase my photopgraphic skills so that I may continue to bring inspirational scenes to my classes and to those who may want to hang them in their living rooms.
