Basalt flows that erupted as early as 400,000 years ago were then flooded by rivers connecting huge lakes that filled the area’s basins during Pleistocene times (Ice-ages). The rivers plunged over the lava flows to make the waterfall. Today there are no rivers flowing here, hence the Fossil Falls moniker.
