Laura, Zephyr and I decided the tome was right to get out of the house and go for a late summer hike in the Toiyabe National Forest along Wolf Creek. The dirt road to the trailhead requires a high clearance vehicle (like our Forester), but it's worth the drive for the solitude. The creek was loaded with what looked to be golden trout or a very vibrant rainbow strain. I didn't have my rod. Wolf Creek is subject to special fishing regulations and artificial flies only, making me think they are goldens.
View of the Sweetwater Range and a dead snag.
Better view of the Sweetwater Range to the east of Sonora Pass.
Laura enjoys Wolf Creek meadow.
Berries were out in force.
A view across the meadow. Wolf Creek is along the willows in the center of the photo.
View west up Wolf Creek Meadow towards Sonora Peak
Interesting marker, marking something.
RT 7-21-89? I think I'll contact the NFS to figure out what this means.
Wolf Creek with the bennefit of a few small t-storms from the previous week. I thought the drought might have had more of an effect that what was observed.
Nice hole full of 10 to 12 inch trout.
The mighty Wold Creek.
Here's one! This fishing would be TOUGH as the fish are spooked very easily.

Looking east down the glaciated trough the holds Wolf Creek.
Man, it sure likes a Volcano Creek golden trout.
Coyote tracks with something a little bigger :-)
Laura loved the views.
Rangers Buttons in the sun along Wolf Creek.
The area was logged-off at some point. Looked to be older than 50yrs.
Did I mention that the USMC uses this area for mountain warfare training? Wish the minority of their soldiers that litter would pack it in, pack it out.

Z zonked on the trail.
After being spooked by Z repeatedly saying "kitty" (um, mountain lion??) we looked for a better meadow for him to run around in and burn some energy.
Grasshoppers.

I found the encroachment of small trees into the meadow interesting. Climate change or just drought, or both?
