_6059368.JPG - This is Manzanar National Historic Site. It was a one square mile "War relocation camp" for the many thousands of Japanese-Americans living on the west coast. The innocent Japanese-American citizens had to move against their will into the shoddy barracks here for "their own protection". The building in this picture was the mess-hall and mutli-purpose gym/theatre etc. It now contains an amazing museum right off hwy 395. I had know since childhood that the Turlock fairgrounds once functioned as a staging facility for those being "relocated", but to see my hometown shown on the map of reloctaion areas was like having a knife of shame twisted into my heart.
