| This picture from 2007 shows the three major rock formations of the Pahrump Group (all tilted at a 45 degree angle or so) which are the oldest sedimentary rocks in California. The desert pavement and wash my wife is walking on is part of the Crystal Srpings Formation which dates to 1.2 BY. And guess what, you can find stromatolite fossils in these rocks that were once tidal flats. If you follow the Crystal Springs rocks up to the dark band in the middle of the picture you'll have arrived at Beck Springs formation which has fossils of the first eukaryotic cells. The layer of rock above the the dark Beck Springs fmt is called the Kingston Peak formation which dates to 700my or so. It contains the most interesting rocks I've ever touched. GO to the next pictures to see why. |
