  _3147167.JPG - The edge of table mountain, near Jamestown.  The hill is composed of a 9.5 myo latite lava flow that went down the old Stanislaus River channel.  The surrounding areas were eroded away while the more resistant latite stayed behind, creating this inverted topography.  Cruise over to Google Earth and look at this flow.  It's pretty amazing.
