They're sitting on a rare complex of nearly unaltered peridotite, with a bunch of highly altered serpentine visible in the background along the road cut. Short story: This WAS a subduction zone where the Foothills Terraine finally collided with the Calaveras Complex some 160 mya. The rock we were standing on was some of the deep mantle rock that caught up in the mix.. |
