Roosevelt Lake

Description of Roosevelt & Lane Lakes: This is a great candidate for an early season hike, right after Sonora Pass Opens, but before the snow melts at the higher elevations. This area is much more arid, but can still produce some great wildflower blooms in Leavit Meadows and along the lakesides. This hike stays flat most of the way, but the last miles sees you climb about 600ft over some rocky and dusty trail. The views are nice, and this trail will whip you into shape for the rest of the season to come. The spring-fed lakes have a reputation for being lunker producers.  I saw a huge, 24+ inch submarine cutthroat that was orange from eating crayfish.  The sucker taunted me for ten minutes, but only dinker brooks hit my lure. My wife was also a witness to this and it is no fish story. Be sure to take trail boat or float tube, as the shores are almost impossible to fish effectively.
