Description of Chain Lakes: A flat, wandering, weakly-preserved trail from Box Springs gently leads through burnt forest on it's way to Chain Lakes. The hiker will pass several shallow lakes laden with lilly-pads (surely choked with mosquitoes during the peak of summer) on the way to the lakes. There are some neat glacial erratics at the lake, and some cool weathered-smoothness on the charred wood. The lakes are well on their way to becoming meadows, which makes fishing very difficult. According to my Emigrant Wilderness book, there are brookies and rainbows to be had, but I had no luck this November afternoon. The trip in to Box Spring is long and rough, so take a good SUV.
