20090811_high_emigrant_lake_0158.JPG - Interesting columnar andesite. When lava & ash flows have a chance to cool and thus contract slowly, the atoms in the lava have time to better organize themselves into efficient bonding arrangements. This results in the hexagonal appearance seen in the column joints.
