Zephyr goes to Monterey for 1st Birthday

Laura and I cannot believe that Zephyr has been with us for one year. So to celebrate such a cool kid’s birthday we went on a mini-vacation to Monterey and even PriceLine splurged for the Hyatt Regency for two nights (nice place, but thin walls). Upon our arrival we took a great stroll along Asilomar State Beach. Day two was a full day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We ended our vacation on day three with a lovely hike through Cypress Cove at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The photos say it all… Zephyr loves being outdoors and especially loves birds.

Asilomar State Beach

Asilomar State Beach is a great place for a leisurely stroll, beautiful flowers and cool geology. Located at the edge of Pacific Grove, the one mile coastal trail atop the 100ma Santa Lucia Granodiorite offers splendid views and even has a couple of awesome small beaches perfect for a toddler that loves to taste the geologic results of weathering and erosion. For the architecture buffs, the conference grounds at the park boast buildings designed by the famed Julia Morgan.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Zephyr’s first trip to the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. He was so enthralled by the sights that he only had one 30min nap for the day. The Jellyfish exhibit was by far the most entrancing for Z. His favorite part of the day, however, was getting to be outside chasing the pigeons and seagulls. Next year he just might be fast enough to catch one!

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

There is amazing geology at Point Lobos, and yet Laura and I were somewhat oblivious to that fact since our main goal for the day was to get a nice family photo at the ocean and to see as much wildlife as possible for Z. Sea Otters, gulls, geese, crows, hawks… all were seen by the keen-eyed Zephyr. As were the cobalt blue coves surrounded by groves of cypress trees that were themselves covered in lichen. A bit of the science can be found in the individual photo descriptions.
