| These massive tufa towers are calcium carbonate deposits that precipitated out of solution while under the Pleistocene Ancient Lake Lahontan. I'm still looking up the details, but I;d almost bet the hot springs in the area contributed to the formations. I've also read that shoreline wave actions can mechanically precipiate the calcium carbonate. |
